William “Bill” Bergan
William “Bill” Bergan
Today’s Division III lacrosse coach must wear many hats — leader, recruiter, mentor, administrator, and educator. Success at this level demands versatility, consistency, and vision. Few embody those qualities as completely as William “Bill” Bergan.
During his two-decade tenure as head coach at Clarkson University, Bergan mastered every aspect of the Division III coaching experience. He managed sizable athletic budgets, supervised and developed assistant coaches, recruited student-athletes across both men’s and women’s programs, raised funds, and counseled students throughout their collegiate journeys. His leadership extended far beyond the sideline, shaping both competitive teams and confident individuals.
The Standard for Division III Lacrosse Coaching Excellence
Bergan’s results speak for themselves. Under his guidance, Clarkson reached four NCAA Tournament appearances and sustained an impressive 60 percent winning percentage. Over the course of his coaching career, he recruited and coached 203 All-Americans, a testament to both his eye for talent and his ability to develop it. His excellence earned him multiple honors, including Empire Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 1993 and Upstate Collegiate AA Lacrosse Coach of the Year in 2002.
Beyond coaching, Bergan has played a significant role in athletic administration. Since 1995, he has served as Clarkson University’s Director of Physical Education. Prior to that role, he led SUNY Geneseo as Athletic Director, further demonstrating his commitment to leadership, organization, and long-term program development.

Bergan’s impact on the game began long before his coaching career. A graduate of Hobart College, he played on one of the most dominant Division III lacrosse dynasties in history. Hobart captured the National Division III Championship every year from 1982 through 1986, and Bergan stood at the center of that success. He earned Tri-Captain honors in the prestigious North–South Game in 1986, was named the nation’s Division III Outstanding Midfielder that same year, and achieved Division III All-American honors in both 1985 and 1986.
In recognition of his collegiate achievements, Hobart inducted Bergan into its Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.
Across decades as a player, coach, and administrator, William “Bill” Bergan has defined what excellence looks like at the Division III level. His legacy is measured not only in championships, awards, and All-Americans, but in the countless student-athletes shaped by his leadership, discipline, and unwavering commitment to the game.
