Dave Bradman
Dave Bradman stands as one of the most influential figures in the history of lacrosse in Canton, New York. As the second Canton inductee into the Class of 2008 Hall of Fame, Bradman’s impact reaches far beyond wins and championships. Like fellow inductee Bill Bergan, coaching shaped his life — and in turn, he helped shape an entire lacrosse community.
A Hall of Fame Legacy That Built Canton Lacrosse
Bradman excelled as a player before making his mark as a coach. A midfielder and team captain at Adelphi University, he demonstrated leadership on the field early in his career. He also competed at an elite level in box lacrosse, playing in the North American Box Lacrosse Association from 1967 to 1981 with the Tonawanda Senecas of Akron, New York. His years as a player instilled a deep understanding of the game that would later define his coaching philosophy.
Bradman transitioned into coaching in 1971, beginning with junior varsity teams at Garden City High School and Rush-Henrietta-Roth High School, where he coached through 1984. During these formative years, he developed a reputation as a disciplined teacher of the game, committed to fundamentals, player development, and accountability.
In 1985, Bradman became the Head Coach of Canton Central School, a position that would cement his legacy. Under his leadership, Canton emerged as a perennial powerhouse. His teams captured 15 league championships, 13 sectional titles, 10 regional championships, and one Western Conference championship. In 1998, Canton reached the pinnacle of high school lacrosse, finishing as the runner-up in the New York State Championship game.
Over the course of his career, Bradman’s teams amassed 337 victories and produced 12 high school All-Americans, a testament to both competitive success and individual player growth. His excellence did not go unnoticed. Bradman earned multiple Coach of the Year honors, coached in numerous Empire State Games, and has served as Section X’s representative since 1986, further influencing the sport at the regional and state levels.
Together, Dave Bradman and Bill Bergan transformed Canton, New York, into one of the true hotbeds of lacrosse. Through leadership, consistency, and an unwavering commitment to the game, Bradman built more than winning teams — he built a lasting lacrosse culture that continues to inspire players, coaches, and communities.
