Bob Deegan’s impact on the game of lacrosse spans decades, levels of play, and national borders. Known for his commitment to excellence, character development, and technical mastery, Deegan has helped shape generations of student-athletes while elevating the sport throughout New York State and beyond.

A Legacy of Excellence in Lacrosse and Leadership

Early Athletic and Academic Excellence

Deegan’s athletic journey began at Plainedge High School in North Massapequa, where he competed in football and basketball while also excelling academically. His dedication in the classroom matched his performance on the field, graduating in the top ten percent of his class — a reflection of the discipline and work ethic that would define his future career.

Collegiate Lacrosse Success at Cortland

Deegan continued his athletic and academic career at Cortland State College, where he played lacrosse for all four years. In 1975, he was a key member of the Cortland team that captured the NCAA Division II and III National Championship. That championship experience further deepened his understanding of the game and laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to coaching and mentorship.

Building a Coaching Legacy

Following his collegiate career, Deegan began coaching at Homer High School, the Slippery Rock Lacrosse Club, and Geneseo State College. These early coaching experiences prepared him for a defining chapter in his career at West Genesee High School, where he arrived in 1979.

Since then, Deegan has been instrumental in helping establish West Genesee as a national powerhouse in scholastic lacrosse. His influence has extended far beyond wins and losses, contributing to a culture rooted in accountability, preparation, and respect for the game.

Head Coach Mike Mesere speaks highly of Deegan’s influence:

“Bob is an outstanding person who has set a very high standard for himself as well as our student-athletes. He is an outstanding teacher in the classroom and on the field. He stresses good character and citizenship above all else. Bob is an excellent defensive coach and student of the game. He is one of the best — if not the best — goalie coaches in the country.”

Coaching at Every Level

Throughout his career, Deegan has coached at nearly every level of the sport. His experience includes working with West Genesee freshman teams, Empire State Games teams, Shove Park programs, Upstate All-Star teams, and serving as Varsity Assistant Coach at West Genesee. In his current role, he works closely with defensemen and goalies, bringing technical expertise and a teacher’s mindset to every practice and game.

International Experience with Team Ireland

Deegan’s coaching reach extended onto the international stage when he served as an assistant coach for the Irish National Lacrosse Team, which competed in the World Games in London, Ontario. Working under legendary Head Coach Richie Moran, Deegan played a critical role in preparing the team for competition.

Coach Moran reflected on Deegan’s contributions:

“Bob played a major role in helping us develop the team’s participation in the World Games. Team Ireland made a successful showing, winning its division while going undefeated. Bob has an excellent knowledge of the skills and fundamentals of lacrosse, which helped us develop Irish players. We are delighted to have Bob as a member of our coaching staff.”

A Lasting Impact on the Game

Bob Deegan’s legacy is defined not only by championships and accolades but by the countless athletes he has influenced through teaching, mentorship, and example. His dedication to character, fundamentals, and continuous learning has left an enduring mark on the lacrosse community and secured his place among the game’s most respected coaches.
