Steven Miller’s impact on the game of lacrosse spans decades, continents, and every level of competition. As a player, coach, official, and administrator, Miller has built a career defined by leadership, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the growth of the sport.

A Legacy of Leadership, Service, and Excellence in Lacrosse

A 1969 graduate of Fayetteville-Manlius High School, Miller distinguished himself early as a leader, serving as captain of both the football and lacrosse teams. His athletic success carried into college, where he attended Alfred University, played defense, and captained the lacrosse team — further establishing the leadership qualities that would define his lifelong connection to the game.

Coaching and Player Development

Miller began his coaching career in 1973 as Head Coach at Bishop Grimes High School. From the outset, he demonstrated a passion for teaching the game and developing young athletes. His influence extended beyond the high school level through his work with the Fayetteville Hornets Nest club program, as well as the Fayetteville-Manlius summer league and modified teams. Across every role, Miller emphasized discipline, sportsmanship, and respect for the game.

Excellence in Officiating at the Highest Levels

Miller’s officiating career is equally distinguished. He has officiated at every level of lacrosse—from scholastic contests to collegiate championship games and professional leagues. His resume includes assignments at the New York State Championships, NCAA Division III title games, and numerous National Lacrosse League (NLL) and Major Indoor Lacrosse League (MILL) competitions.

His expertise and reputation as an official earned him international assignments, taking him to England, Eastern Europe, and venues throughout the United States. These opportunities reflected not only his technical skill but also the trust placed in him to represent the sport on the global stage.

Leadership and Service to the Game

Beyond the field, Miller has been a tireless advocate for lacrosse through leadership and service. He founded the Fayetteville-Manlius Youth Lacrosse League and continues to serve as a member of its Board of Directors, helping ensure access and opportunity for the next generation of players.

Miller has also served as President of the New York High School Officials Association and as a Board member of the National Junior Lacrosse Association. At the national level, he currently serves as Chairman of the Collegiate Officials Committee for US Lacrosse, where he continues to shape officiating standards and mentor officials across the country.

Honors and International Recognition

In recognition of his contributions, Miller was named Section III Man of the Year in 1995. His excellence as an official led to selection as a United States representative at the 1998 World Games and the 2003 Under-19 World Games — prestigious assignments that placed him among the elite ambassadors of the sport.

Life Beyond Lacrosse

Steven Miller resides in Cazenovia with his wife, Ann, and their two sons. Outside of lacrosse, he pursues another lifelong passion: skiing. An accomplished extreme skier, Miller has also been a professional ski instructor for more than 20 years, further reflecting his commitment to teaching, challenge, and personal excellence.

A Hall-of-Fame Legacy

Steven Miller’s legacy is not defined by a single role, title, or moment, but by a lifetime of service to lacrosse. As a leader, official, coach, and mentor, his influence continues to shape the sport at every level. His career stands as a testament to what sustained dedication and leadership can achieve — on the field, off the field, and far beyond it.
