Joseph Mars

Joseph Mars represents the very best of lacrosse officiating — dedication without ego, excellence without fanfare, and service to the game at the highest levels for decades.

A Lifetime of Excellence in Lacrosse Officiating

Born in Ithaca, New York, in 1942, Mars built his foundation as a multi-sport athlete, competing in football, basketball, and track during his high school years. His athletic journey continued at Oneonta State, where he played basketball and developed the competitive discipline that would later define his officiating career.

Mars pursued graduate studies at the University of Binghamton, SUNY Cortland, and Cornell University, pairing academic rigor with a deepening commitment to education. From 1965 to 1997, he served as an educator in the Vestal Central School District, shaping young minds while quietly laying the groundwork for a remarkable second calling.

A Distinguished Officiating Career

Although Joseph Mars never played lacrosse, he developed an exceptional understanding of the game and began officiating in the early 1970s. His potential was quickly recognized by respected leaders Dave Sammon and Terry Cullen, who recruited him and entrusted him with assignments that spoke volumes about his skill, judgment, and presence on the field.

Over the course of his career, Mars officiated some of the most prestigious games and events in the sport. His assignments included multiple New York State Championship games, the first lacrosse game ever played in the Carrier Dome, and numerous elite tournaments, including Lake Placid and New Orleans. He also officiated several Empire State Games, two Tampa Jam tournaments, and an All-Star Game at Johns Hopkins University.

In the 1990s, Mars continued to officiate at the highest level, earning assignments at the Vail Tournament and serving as an auxiliary official at the 1994 World Games. He also officiated multiple NCAA Final Four games — opportunities he continues to regard as among the most meaningful and rewarding moments of his career.

His consistent presence in championship settings reflected the trust placed in him by the lacrosse community and underscored his reputation for fairness, composure, and professionalism.

Beyond the Field

Joseph Mars’s impact extends beyond officiating. He and his wife, Peg, raised two children, Joe and Amy, and are proud grandparents to two grandchildren. Outside of lacrosse, Mars enjoys golf and spending time boating on Cayuga Lake — pursuits that mirror the balance, patience, and appreciation he brings to life and sport alike.

A Legacy Worth Honoring

Joseph Mars exemplifies what it means to serve the game with integrity. His career stands as a testament to the idea that excellence is built through preparation, consistency, and quiet leadership. For generations of players, coaches, and fellow officials, his presence elevated the game — and his legacy continues to do so.
