A Championship Legacy in Lacrosse
High School Dominance at West Genesee
John Zulberti attended West Genesee High School, where he quickly established himself as one of the premier players in New York State. He was a key contributor to the Wildcats’ New York State Championship teams in 1983 and 1985, helping cement West Genesee’s reputation as a national powerhouse.
In 1985, Zulberti served as team captain, leading with both performance and poise. His individual excellence was equally undeniable, as he earned High School All-American honors twice, in 1984 and 1985. In 1984, he was selected to compete in the inaugural Empire State Games, where he captured a gold medal as a member of the Central Team — an early indication of the success that would follow.
A Historic Career at Syracuse University
Zulberti continued his ascent at Syracuse University, where he became one of the most decorated attackmen in program history. Over four seasons, he earned All-American honors every year — third team in 1986, second team in 1987, and first team recognition in both 1988 and 1989.

His collegiate career was defined by winning. Zulberti played a vital role on Syracuse’s 1988 and 1989 NCAA National Championship teams and was selected as captain of the 1989 championship squad. His leadership and consistency were central to the Orange’s dominance during that era.
Twice, Zulberti was awarded the prestigious Jack Turnbull Award, recognizing the nation’s most outstanding attackman (1988 and 1989). His offensive production placed him sixth all-time in career points at Syracuse University, and his reliability was unmatched — he recorded at least one point in every game he played and never missed a game during his collegiate career.
Post-Collegiate Recognition
Following his collegiate success, Zulberti earned national recognition at the international level. In 1990, he was selected as an alternate player for Team USA, further affirming his status among the elite players of his generation.
A Lasting Standard of Excellence
John Zulberti’s career is defined by championships, consistency, and competitive excellence. At every level of the game, he performed under pressure, elevated those around him, and upheld the highest standards of the sport. His legacy remains firmly etched in the history of West Genesee lacrosse, Syracuse University athletics, and the broader lacrosse community.
