James Blanding

James “Jim” Blanding’s name is etched into the history of Upstate New York lacrosse, where his journey from a high school standout to a collegiate All-American and Hall of Fame inductee remains a model of athletic excellence and leadership.

A Legacy of Excellence in West Genesee and Loyola Lacrosse

High School Success at West Genesee

A 1987 graduate of West Genesee High School, Blanding quickly established himself as one of the region’s most dynamic players. He was a two-time all-league selection in 1986 and 1987 and played a key role in guiding West Genesee to the New York State Championship game in 1987. His dominant performance in that game earned him MVP honors in what became one of the most decisive championship victories in state history.

In addition to his high school achievements, Blanding won the Silver Medal at the 1986 Empire State Games, further solidifying his status as one of the top young talents in New York.

A Standout Career at Loyola University

Blanding continued his academic and athletic journey at Loyola University, where he graduated in 1992. His impact on the lacrosse program began the moment he stepped onto the field. He became one of the top five scorers of the Division I era at Loyola, anchoring an offense that helped Coach Dave Cottle’s Greyhounds transform into perennial NCAA tournament contenders. During Blanding’s four years at Loyola, the team reached the NCAA tournament every season.

His sophomore year remains one of the most impressive individual seasons in Loyola men’s lacrosse history. In 1990, Blanding tied the school’s Division I record with 60 points, earned First Team All-American honors, and led the Greyhounds to their first NCAA Championship Game—facing none other than his hometown Syracuse Orange.

Over the course of his college career, Blanding was selected as an All-American three times and served as team captain during his senior year, cementing his place among the school’s all-time greats.

Professional Lacrosse and Continued Involvement

After his collegiate career, Blanding played four seasons in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League (MILL) and competed with the Upstate Lacrosse Club. His contributions to the game were formally recognized in 2016 when he was inducted into the Loyola Sports Hall of Fame.

Today, Blanding remains deeply involved in the sport, coaching within the Camillus Youth Lacrosse Association (CYLA) and in club lacrosse, where he continues to mentor young players and grow the game he loves.

Life and Career Beyond the Field

Professionally, Blanding works in the school market, selling sports equipment and classroom furniture throughout New York to both private and public institutions. He resides in Camillus with his wife, Cindy, and their three children—Olivia, Ashleigh, and Drew—continuing to be an active and influential presence in the community.

A Lasting Legacy

From high school stardom to collegiate prominence, professional play, coaching, and community leadership, James “Jim” Blanding’s impact on the sport of lacrosse extends far beyond the field. His career stands as a testament to dedication, excellence, and the lifelong power of sport to shape character and community.
