Oliver Hill Jr. began playing lacrosse at just five years old, setting the foundation for what would become one of the most impactful careers in Indigenous and North American lacrosse history. A proud member of the Onondaga Athletic Club from 1964 to 1978, Hill earned a reputation early on for his toughness, skill, and relentless competitive spirit. Standing 5’10” and weighing 165 pounds, he was known throughout the league as a force on the floor—action always followed him.
A Lifelong Connection to the Creator’s Game
Dominance in the National American Lacrosse Association
Hill emerged as one of the National American Lacrosse Association’s brightest stars, playing for teams representing the Onondaga Nation. His offensive brilliance made him a four-time league scoring leader, while his all-around play consistently earned him All-League All-Star recognition.
In 1969, Hill was selected to the NALA All-Star Team, where he quickly became known as “Lover,” a nickname spoken with respect across the league. His exceptional stickwork, scoring ability, physical play, and versatility made him a team leader and one of the toughest matchups in the sport.
Hill continued his All-Star dominance into 1971, finishing the season as the league’s second-leading scorer. Across 18 games that year, he recorded an impressive 53 goals and 27 assists for 80 total points—remarkable numbers in one of the most competitive lacrosse eras. From 1972 to 1978, Hill competed with the Syracuse Warriors Lacrosse Team, further cementing his reputation as a premier offensive talent.
Education and Collegiate Career
Hill attended Syracuse University, where he played attack and continued to develop the skill set that would make him one of the most respected Indigenous lacrosse players of his generation. He graduated from Syracuse in 1977 with a Bachelor’s Degree and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from St. Lawrence University in 1981.
Hall of Fame Honors, Leadership, and Lifelong Service
Oliver Hill Jr.’s contributions extend well beyond his playing years. In 2008, he was inducted into the Eastern Canada Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in recognition of his achievements and lasting influence.
His leadership shaped the sport at multiple levels:
- President of the National American Lacrosse Association (NALA)
- Member of the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame
- Founder of the Masters Lacrosse League
- Founding member of the Iroquois Lacrosse League
Hill also dedicated over 30 years to officiating both box and field lacrosse, ensuring the sport’s traditions and standards were upheld for future generations. Beyond officiating, he spent many years coaching and sponsoring teams from the Onondaga Nation, giving back to the community that shaped his identity and talents.
