A Lacrosse Legacy Built on Excellence

Early Success at Jamesville-DeWitt

A 1986 graduate of Jamesville-DeWitt High School, Greg Burns quickly established himself as one of the program’s all-time greats. He earned All-League honors in both 1985 and 1986, showcasing consistent dominance and elite offensive skill.

During his senior season, Burns recorded 137 points, a total that remains second-highest for a single season in Jamesville-DeWitt lacrosse history. That same year, he earned All-American honors and helped lead his team to its first-ever New York State Lacrosse Championship, cementing his place in school history.

Burns also represented the Central New York Team at the 1985 Empire State Games, further demonstrating his standing among the region’s top players.

Championship Career at Syracuse University

Burns continued his rise at Syracuse University, where he played from 1986 to 1990 and became one of the most accomplished attackmen in program history. During his collegiate career, he competed on four Final Four teams, earned three All-American selections, and captured three National Championships.

In 1990, Burns received the prestigious Jack Turnbull Award, presented annually to the nation’s top attackman. That same Syracuse squad has since been recognized as the greatest lacrosse team of the century, placing Burns among the elite players in the sport’s history.

He graduated from Syracuse University in 1990, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, discipline, and winning at the highest level.

Giving Back to the Game

Burns remains deeply involved in lacrosse, dedicating his time to developing young athletes and growing the game at the grassroots level. He actively supports local youth through the Jamesville-DeWitt Youth Lacrosse program and the Orange Crush Lacrosse organization, helping players build both skills and a deeper understanding of the sport.

His continued involvement reflects a commitment not just to winning, but to mentorship and the future of lacrosse.

Professional Career and Family Life

Beyond the field, Greg Burns has built a successful career in finance. He currently serves as First Vice President of Wealth Management and Senior Financial Advisor at Merrill Lynch. Since graduating from Syracuse University, he has worked in both New York City and Syracuse, building long-term relationships and advising clients with the same discipline and focus that defined his athletic career.

Greg lives in Fayetteville with his wife, Amy, and their three children — Grayson, Riley, and Tanner — balancing family, professional leadership, and continued service to the sport that shaped his life.
