Sue Gallagher
Sue Gallagher
Fine teacher. Great coach.
Those four words define the remarkable career of Sue Gallagher, a true legend of Carthage Central School and a cornerstone of girls’ lacrosse in the North Country. Though she has stepped away from the sidelines, the impact of her 31 years as an educator and 29 years as a coach continues to shape the lives of her students and athletes.
A Hall of Fame Legacy at Carthage Central
Gallagher didn’t inherit success — she built it.
In 1999, she founded Carthage Central’s girls lacrosse program from the ground up, laying the foundation for what would become one of the region’s most respected programs. Just three years later, she played a pivotal role in forming the Frontier League, further strengthening competitive opportunities for student-athletes across the area.
From 1999 through 2014, Gallagher’s teams compiled an extraordinary record of 223 wins and just 81 losses, a testament to her preparation, discipline, and ability to bring out the best in her players. Her program reached its competitive peak between 2001 and 2010, capturing seven Frontier League Championships, five Sectional Titles, and earning State Finalist and Semifinalist finishes along the way. During that stretch, her teams also produced an astounding 57-game winning streak, a run that defined an era.
Beyond the numbers, Gallagher’s true legacy lies in player development. Under her leadership, seven High School All-Americans, three collegiate All-Americans, and more than 45 college-bound players emerged from the Carthage program. She prepared athletes not only for the next level of competition, but for life beyond the field.
Her influence extended well past the school season. In 2001, Gallagher coached the first girls’ team ever to compete in the Empire State Games, marking a historic moment for the region. In 2010, she led the Under Armour Central Area Team, and that same year, she was honored as All-CNY Coach of the Year, a recognition from peers who understood the magnitude of her work.
Sue Gallagher’s career stands as a model of leadership, commitment, and excellence. She built programs, elevated players, and left standards that still define success today.
A Hall of Fame career in every sense of the word.
