Phil Willard
Phil Willard
If lacrosse greatness has a home address, it starts in West Genesee, New York. And Phil Willard is one of its finest ambassadors.
Willard proudly represents West Genesee High School, the program that has produced more Hall of Famers than any high school in the country. Under the legendary guidance of Coach Mike Mesere, Willard began shaping his lacrosse legacy in 1983. He played a central role on West Genesee’s 1983 and 1985 New York State Championship teams, captaining the 1985 squad and earning All-American honors along the way.
A Hall-of-Fame Legacy Built on Leadership and Excellence
From there, Willard carried his leadership and competitive fire to the University of Maryland, one of the nation’s premier collegiate lacrosse programs. As captain of the 1989 Terrapins, he set the standard both on and off the field. That season, Willard was named Maryland’s Player of the Year, earned All-American honors for the second consecutive year, and was recognized as the ACC and University of Maryland Midfielder of the Year. His impact extended beyond lacrosse, as he was also honored as the University of Maryland’s Male Athlete of the Year — a testament to his excellence as both a competitor and a representative of the university.
Following his collegiate success, Willard continued his playing career at the professional level, competing for two seasons with the Pittsburgh Bulls of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League. His transition to the indoor game further showcased his adaptability, skill, and enduring love for competition.
Willard’s contributions to the sport have been recognized long after his playing days. In 2024, he was honored as a member of the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame Team of Honor, recognized as part of the historic 1983 West Genesee High School championship team — a fitting tribute to a program and a player that helped define an era.
Coaching has remained a central part of Willard’s lacrosse journey. He has coached at Shove Park, served as a graduate assistant at the University of Maryland, and currently leads the Cazenovia High School Girls Lacrosse program. Through coaching, he continues to shape the game by mentoring young athletes and passing on the values of discipline, teamwork, and leadership that defined his own career.
Off the field, Willard is equally accomplished. He serves as President of the Willard Insurance Group in Cazenovia, New York, balancing professional leadership with a lifelong commitment to the sport. Phil and his wife, Amy, are the proud parents of two daughters.
From West Genesee championships to collegiate honors, professional play, coaching, and community leadership, Phil Willard’s story is one of sustained excellence. His legacy is not defined by a single season or accolade, but by a lifetime of leadership, achievement, and service to the game of lacrosse.
