William “Bill” Wormuth
Introduced to lacrosse through an intramural program at Baldwinsville High School in the fall of 1956, William “Bill” Wormuth played center midfield at the school from 1957 to 1960.
In the fall of 1960, Wormuth entered Syracuse University on a lacrosse scholarship and played center midfield his freshman year under Coach Roy Simmons Jr. Wormuth then played varsity lacrosse from 1962-1964 as a center midfielder under Coach Roy Simmons Sr. Wormuth was a three-year letter winner and co-captain in 1964.
In the spring of 1965, Wormuth was the graduate Assistant Coach to Roy Simmons Sr for the varsity lacrosse team at Syracuse University. Wormuth then organized, coached, and played for the Baldwinsville lacrosse Club for the summers of 1964 and 1965.
In the fall of 1965, Wormuth was hired by the West Genesee High School to teach science and coach lacrosse. From 1966 to 1975, Wormuth was the West Genesee varsity lacrosse coach. Wormuth was also the Assistant Principal at the West Genesee High School from 1975 to 1977.
While coaching at West Genesee, Wormuth had an overall record of 121 wins and 31 losses with a .796 winning percentage. He coached the Wildcats to Onondaga High School League (OHSL) to a co-championship in 1966 and 1970. Wormuth’s teams were OHSL League Champions for five consecutive years from 1971-1975. Under his guidance, his teams were the Upstate Lacrosse League Champion in 1971, Section III Champion in 1971, 1974, 1975, and Intersectional Champions III versus IV in 1975.
During his career at West Genesee, Wormuth coached 8 All-Americans, 18 first team, 7 second team, and 12 Honorable Mention Upstate Lacrosse League players. He also coached 38 first team, 18 second team, and 36 Honorable Mention All-County players. Wormuth was also voted Coach of the Year in 1968, 1971, 1973, and 1975.
Wormuth served as Secretary of the Upstate Lacrosse League in the late 60s, Lacrosse Chairman for the OHSL, and Section III NYSPHSAA until 1975. Wormuth proposed and worked to implement the NYSPHSAA State Lacrosse Tournament.
In 1975, Wormuth was named the Secondary School Representative to the United States Lacrosse Coaches Association. He served on the Executive Committee of Section III, Boys Lacrosse Chairman of Section III, and Executive Committee of the Frontier League. In the late 90s, Wormuth facilitated the development of the Boys’ Interscholastic Lacrosse Team at Lowville Academy & Central School. Wormuth was named Section III Man of the Year in 2016.
Wormuth is Commissioner of the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation – Thousand Island State Park Region; past President of the Lewis Lewis County General Hospital Board of Managers and the Lewis County Hospital Foundation; Board Member and Treasurer for the Hand in Hand Early Childhood Center; Board Member of the Lewis County United Fund, and the Thousand Island Girl Scouts COuncil; Warden and Vestry person for the Trinity Episcopal Church of Lowville; Member and Search Committee Chairman for the Shared Episcopal Ministry East Council, and member of the Lowville Elks Lodge.
Bill and his wife Mary currently live in East Syracuse.
