A Hall of Fame Lacrosse Career from West Genesee to the World Stage
A West Genesee Legend
At West Genesee High School, Mike Schattner established himself as one of the program’s most dominant and respected players. As a Wildcat, he served as team captain, earned All-American honors, and was named team MVP in 1986. His defensive presence helped anchor one of the most successful programs in the nation.
Schattner’s legacy at West Genesee reached its peak during the 1987 New York State Championship run, where he was named Defensive MVP of the title game — a recognition reserved for players who rise under the brightest pressure.
Representing the United States on the World Stage
In 1988, Schattner took his talents beyond domestic competition when he was selected to the U.S. Junior World Lacrosse Team. Competing in Adelaide, Australia, he captained the squad to a World Championship title. His performance earned him selection to the prestigious All-World Team, cementing his status as one of the elite defenders in international lacrosse.
Excellence at the University of Virginia
Schattner continued his remarkable trajectory at the University of Virginia, where his defensive skill, leadership, and discipline flourished. He served as team captain for two seasons and earned All-American honors three times during his collegiate career.
In addition to his on-field success, Schattner was named an All-ACC Team MVP and an Academic All-American in 1991 — a rare combination that reflected both his athletic dominance and academic commitment. At Virginia, he set the standard for what it meant to lead by example.
Professional Play and Giving Back to the Game
Schattner’s playing career extended into the professional ranks with the Syracuse Smash of the National Lacrosse League, where he continued to compete at the highest level of the sport.
Today, his influence remains strong as he gives back to the game that shaped him. Schattner currently coaches the freshman lacrosse team at his alma mater, West Genesee, passing along the lessons of discipline, teamwork, and accountability to the next generation of Wildcats.
A Legacy Beyond the Field
Beyond lacrosse, Mike Schattner’s life reflects the same values that defined his playing career. He is married to Martha Major, and together they are raising three children — continuing a legacy rooted in commitment, leadership, and service.
From West Genesee to the world stage, from championships to classrooms, Mike Schattner’s lacrosse journey is one worthy of Hall of Fame recognition — not just for what he achieved, but for how he achieved it.
