High School – Nottingham HS:  Played 5 years of varsity lacrosse at Nottingham High School (from eighth grade through the senior year; 2001 – 2005 seasons) … Scored 42 goals and had 29 assists for 71 points his senior year … Totaled 212 career points (131 goals, 81 assists) … Three-time team captain (sophomore, junior, senior years) … Member of the gold medal-winning 2004 Empire State Games Central team… Earned Honorable Mention All-League his freshman year … Named First-team All-League and All-CNY Honorable Mention his sophomore year … Selected as an alternate to the Empire State Games Central team his sophomore year … First-team All-League and First-team All-CNY his junior year … First-team All-league, First-team All-CNY, and All-American his senior year.

College – Syracuse University: Played in all 64 games over four-year career (2006 – 2009 seasons). Totaled 41 goals, 26 assists, and 212 groundballs in his career.  Two-time National Champion (2008, 2009). Two-time USILA All-American; USILA Third-Team All-American as a Junior (2008).  USILA First-Team All-American as a Senior (2009).  As a senior was named a Tewaaraton Trophy Finalist and Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Finalist.  Named a USILA Scholar All-American and selected to the Lowe’s Senior All-America First Team (2009). Selected to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team (2009) after recording five assists in the postseason, including one on Kenny Nims’ game-tying goal versus Cornell at the end of regulation in the NCAA title game … Team captain as a senior (2009).  Member of SU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in 7 of 8 semesters in college.

Professional – Major League Lacrosse: Drafted 9th overall in the first round by the Washington Bayhawks in the 2009 MLL Draft (later named the Chesapeake Bayhawks starting in the 2010 season). Played in 153 games in 11 seasons for the Bayhawks. Bayhawks leader in career games played. Totaled 117 goals, 72 assists, and 409 groundballs in his Bayhawks career. Four-time MLL Champion (2010, 2012, 2013, 2019). Nine-time MLL All-Star.

International – Team USA: Selected as an alternate for Team USA in the 2010 World Games. Member of the silver medal Team USA in the 2014 World Games. Selected to the training team for Team USA in the 2018 World Games.

Professional – Premier Lacrosse League: Current Member of the Whipsnakes Lacrosse Club.

Coaching – Colgate University: Served as the Men’s Lacrosse Volunteer Assistant Coach at Colgate University for 7 seasons (2012-2018) under Head Coach Mike Murphy and Matt’s older brother, Mike Abbott, who was Colgate’s Offensive Coordinator & Associate Head Coach.

Personal: Matthew Joseph Abbott … Born in September 1986 in Syracuse, N.Y. … Son of Tom and Lorie Abbott … Older brother (Mike) and younger sister (Melissa) … Third member of the Abbott family to play lacrosse at Syracuse University, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Larry Abbott (1950-52) and father, Tom Abbott (1975-78).  Both of whom are Upstate Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame Inductees (Larry – 2002, Tom – 2006).

Matt and his wife, Alida, were high school sweethearts and married in September 2015. They currently reside in Fayetteville, NY with their son, Landen, who was born in May 2020.
