Lyle Pierce

Lyle Pierce was one of the great historical Onondaga lacrosse players. Lyle played when Onondaga and other native players were being banned from playing field lacrosse because all native players were labeled as pros. Lyle and other players then turned to a new sport, box lacrosse.

Lyle cannot be separated without talking about his older brother Stanley “Buffalo” Pierce. Together, they made a dynamic duo on the lacrosse field. Working together, like brothers, Lyle and Buffalo would set picks and screens for each other to create scoring opportunities, confusing defenders and goalies alike. As one of the most dynamic scorers, Lyle often scored multiple goals per game and had a deadly accurate underhand shot that skimmed over the grass, which was nicknamed the “grass-cutter.”

Lyle was on the team that played against Johns Hopkins to see who would play against Canada in the Olympics. Lyle also played professionally with the Syracuse Red Devils and the Rochester Seneca Indians
