A 1977 graduate of West Genesee High School, Donahue emerged from one of the region’s most storied lacrosse programs — a dynasty built in part by his older brothers, Marty and Kevin Donahue. Immersed in a culture of discipline, teamwork, and high standards, Tom Donahue distinguished himself as a leader across multiple sports. During his senior year, he served as captain of both the football and lacrosse teams, an achievement that spoke to his character as much as his athletic ability.

That year proved historic. Donahue was named an All-League safety in football and earned All-American honors in lacrosse, capping a season in which West Genesee captured the Section III lacrosse championship and secured a berth in the inaugural New York State High School Lacrosse Tournament. It was a defining chapter not only in Donahue’s career, but in the broader legacy of West Genesee athletics.

Following high school, Donahue continued his academic and athletic journey at Syracuse University, where he played varsity lacrosse from 1979 through 1981. Competing at the highest collegiate level, he quickly established himself as one of the program’s elite players. His junior year brought Second-Team All-American honors, followed by First-Team All-American recognition as a senior.

Perhaps most notably, Donahue was part of the first teams in Syracuse University history to qualify for the NCAA Lacrosse Playoffs, helping to elevate the national profile of the program and laying the groundwork for future success. His collegiate career reflected the same traits that defined his high school years — leadership, consistency, and an unwavering competitive spirit.

After completing his collegiate career, Donahue returned home to West Genesee High School, beginning what would become an extraordinary coaching tenure. Over 34 years of coaching football and 37 years of coaching lacrosse, he shaped generations of student-athletes, emphasizing fundamentals, accountability, and respect for the game. His impact was especially pronounced at the modified level, where his teams compiled an astonishing 93% winning percentage, a testament to both preparation and player development.

Donahue’s influence extended far beyond the school year. For more than 40 summers, he taught and coached lacrosse through the Camillus Recreation Department’s Shove Park program, introducing countless young players to the sport and fostering a lifelong appreciation for teamwork and discipline. He has also been a dedicated contributor to the John Pepper Memorial Lacrosse Tournament, where his involvement over the past 18 years further reflects his commitment to the lacrosse community.

At every level, Tom Donahue has been more than a coach — he has been a steward of the game, a mentor to young athletes, and a standard-bearer for integrity in sport.

Tom and his wife, Mary, are the proud parents of two children and loving grandparents. As he enters retirement, the Donahues look forward to spending more time exercising, traveling, and enjoying family, while reflecting on a career defined by service, excellence, and lasting impact.

Donahue’s induction into the Upstate Lacrosse Hall of Fame is a fitting recognition of a life dedicated to lacrosse and education. It also continues a family tradition of distinction, following the induction of his brother Kevin Donahue, who was honored by the Hall of Fame in 2006. Together, the Donahue name stands as a symbol of leadership, legacy, and excellence in Upstate New York lacrosse history.
