A Legacy of Excellence in Central New York Lacrosse

Early Athletic Success at Immaculate Heart Central

Michael Perkins graduated from Watertown Immaculate Heart Central High School in 1981. During his time at IHC, he distinguished himself as a rare three-sport All-Star in lacrosse, football, and basketball. His athletic versatility and competitive drive set him apart early and established him as one of the premier athletes in the region.

In lacrosse, Perkins earned All-American honors at the Attack position and secured a spot on the First Team All–Central New York roster. On the basketball court, he led his team to the New York State Semi-Finals, demonstrating leadership and performance under pressure. His senior year culminated with the prestigious Clarence “Boots” Gaffeney Award, recognizing him as the top male athlete at Immaculate Heart Central.

A Record-Setting Career at Cortland State

Perkins continued his athletic and academic career at SUNY Cortland from 1981 to 1985. As a member of the Red Dragons lacrosse program, he became a four-year starter at Attack and one of the most productive scorers in program history.

Over four seasons, Perkins amassed 271 career points, a record that stood for 31 years until it was surpassed in 2016. He became the first player in Cortland State history to score more than 50 points in each of his four seasons. His individual accolades reflected consistent excellence: he earned Team MVP honors as a freshman, received Third Team All-American recognition as a sophomore, and achieved First Team All-American status during both his junior and senior seasons.

Team success followed individual achievement. During Perkins’ final three seasons, the Red Dragons captured the SUNYAC championship each year with an undefeated 6–0 conference record. Cortland also advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament twice, including a national semifinal appearance during his senior season. That same year, Perkins earned selection to the prestigious North–South All-Star Game, a fitting capstone to his collegiate career.

Continued Excellence Beyond College

Following graduation, Perkins earned an invitation to try out for the USA World Team, further validating his standing among the nation’s elite players. He continued to compete at a high level with several prominent club teams, including the Watertown Lacrosse Club, where he played alongside many of Upstate New York’s top All-Star athletes.

In 2009, Perkins added another highlight to his playing résumé by earning MVP honors at the renowned Vail Lacrosse Shootout. He also played professionally for the Syracuse Spirit of the American Lacrosse League. In recognition of his lasting impact, Immaculate Heart Central inducted Perkins into its Hall of Fame in 2002.

Giving Back Through Family and Community

Beyond his playing career, Perkins has remained deeply involved in lacrosse, particularly in the Syracuse area, where he has supported and mentored numerous teams — including those of his own children. His son, Michael Perkins Jr., continued the family tradition of excellence by playing lacrosse at Loyola University Maryland, graduating in 2017.

Michael Perkins is the proud father of three children: Michael Jr., Dylan, and Jack. He currently resides in DeWitt, New York, where he works in insurance sales with Worlco Insurance Services.

Through decades of achievement, leadership, and service to the sport, Michael Perkins exemplifies what it means to leave the game better than he found it.
