Mark Webster
Mark Webster
Mark Webster’s lacrosse journey did not begin with youth leagues or summer camps. It began in 1966, when the three-sport standout from Ithaca High School picked up a lacrosse stick for the first time after enrolling at Cornell University. What followed was one of the most remarkable and rapid ascents in Big Red history.
From Late Start to Cornell Lacrosse Legend
Great players are often defined by how early they begin. Great stories are defined by how far they rise. Webster didn’t just learn the game — he mastered it.
An Immediate Impact in Big Red
As a freshman, Webster burst onto the collegiate lacrosse scene with authority. In just six games, he led the Cornell team in scoring with 30 goals and 9 assists, an extraordinary achievement for any player — let alone one new to the sport. His leadership and competitive fire were undeniable, and he was selected as team captain, setting the tone for a career defined by excellence and respect.
Championship Pedigree and National Honors
By 1968, Webster had established himself as one of the premier attackmen in the country. That season, he scored 50 goals while helping Cornell capture the Ivy League Championship. His dominance earned him All-American and All-Ivy honors, recognition reserved for the game’s elite.
The following year, Webster elevated his play even further. In 1969, he delivered another fierce offensive campaign, earning “All-Everything” recognition along with Team Most Valuable Player honors. His relentless attack style, vision, and scoring touch made him a constant threat and a cornerstone of the program.
An Undefeated Season and Lasting Legacy
In 1970, Webster helped lead Cornell to an undefeated season and another Ivy League Championship — a defining moment in program history. His performance and leadership that year earned him the distinction of Outstanding Collegiate Lacrosse Player in Central New York, a fitting capstone to an extraordinary collegiate career.
Webster’s legacy at Cornell is not measured only by goals or titles, but by the standard he set. He proved that commitment, intelligence, and competitiveness could compress years of experience into seasons of greatness.
Life Beyond the Field
After his lacrosse career, Webster pursued medicine, attending medical school and dedicating his life to service. He now practices family medicine in Old Forge, New York, continuing a career rooted in care, discipline, and leadership.
In 1972, he married Susan Wingerd. Together, they raised three daughters and are proud grandparents to five grandchildren — a family legacy as meaningful as any championship.
A Hall-of-Fame Standard
Mark Webster’s story is one of uncommon trajectory and enduring impact. From first-time stick holder to Cornell legend, Ivy League champion, All-American, and respected physician, his life reflects excellence in every arena he entered.
Some players grow into the game. Mark Webster rose above it — and left it better than he found it.
