Great officials do more than enforce the rules — they protect the integrity of the game. Jim O’Hara has done exactly that for more than five decades, earning respect at every level of lacrosse through consistency, preparation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

A Hall of Fame Career in Lacrosse Officiating

O’Hara’s love of the game began at West Genesee High School, where he played modified, junior varsity, and varsity lacrosse. From 1964 to 1970, he developed a deep understanding of the sport — not only how it is played, but what it teaches. Lacrosse, for O’Hara, was always about more than wins and losses. It was about discipline, teamwork, accountability, and character.

When his playing days ended, O’Hara was not ready to step away. Instead, he transitioned seamlessly into officiating, bringing his knowledge, vision, and respect for the game to the next generation of athletes.

A Leader at the High School Level

Jim O’Hara began officiating high school boys lacrosse in 1972, quickly establishing himself as a trusted and authoritative presence on the field. Over the years, he was selected to referee numerous High School State Championship games, sectional playoffs, and finals — assignments reserved only for officials who demonstrate the highest level of competence and professionalism.

In 2004, O’Hara expanded his officiating career to include girls’ high school lacrosse, further demonstrating his versatility and dedication to serving the sport in all its forms.

Excellence on the Collegiate Stage

In 1976, O’Hara’s sharp eye, calm demeanor, and exacting judgment earned him the opportunity to officiate collegiate men’s lacrosse. What followed was a career few can match.

He officiated 14 NCAA Final Four games, five Division I National Championship games, and countless NCAA playoff contests. These assignments reflect decades of trust placed in O’Hara at the highest levels of competition, where precision and leadership are essential.

National and International Impact

O’Hara’s reputation extended beyond the collegiate game. From 1998 to 2001, he officiated in the National Lacrosse League, adapting his skills to the professional indoor game. He also represented the sport on the international stage, officiating the World Games in Baltimore, further cementing his status as one of lacrosse’s elite officials.

In 1994, O’Hara was appointed New York State Governor for Men’s Lacrosse, a role that recognized his leadership, experience, and commitment to advancing officiating standards across the state.

A Lasting Legacy

Jim O’Hara’s career reflects what the Hall of Fame represents: longevity, excellence, leadership, and service to the game. From high school fields to NCAA championships, professional leagues, and international competition, he has consistently set the standard for what it means to officiate with integrity.

His impact reaches far beyond the games he officiated. It lives on in the officials he mentored, the players he protected, and the sport he helped elevate.
