James Case
James Case
James (Jim) Case (May 22, 1964 – March 14, 2020) was more than just an athletic trainer — he was a mentor, friend, and steady presence in the world of lacrosse. Over a career that spanned more than three decades, Jim became a cornerstone of the Cornell University athletic community, particularly within the men’s lacrosse program. Known for his compassion, professionalism, and sense of humor, he left an indelible mark on the athletes, coaches, and colleagues who were fortunate enough to know him.
Early Career and Education
Jim Case earned his bachelor’s degree in sports medicine, with a minor in exercise science, from Central Michigan University in 1986. Two years later, in 1988, he completed his master’s degree in physical education from Western Michigan University. That same fall, Jim accepted the role of Associate Head Athletic Trainer at Cornell University — a position he would hold for the next 32 years.
A Fixture on the Sidelines
Throughout his career at Cornell, James Case was a constant presence on the sidelines of Big Red athletics. He supported athletes through countless snowy February practices, Ivy League Championships, and NCAA tournament appearances. While his role was primarily to prevent and treat injuries, Jim’s influence extended far beyond physical care.
He was known to lend a listening ear, offer thoughtful advice, and lighten tense moments with his trademark humor. To athletes and coaches alike, Jim was not only a trainer but also a source of encouragement and a trusted friend.

Responding to Tragedy with Grace
Jim Case’s steady leadership was never more evident than in 2004, when Cornell lacrosse player George Boiardi tragically died during a game. Jim played a critical role in the emergency response that day and remained committed to ensuring that George’s legacy was honored in the years that followed. He also used his experience to educate other athletic trainers about emergency response, helping to prepare them for moments of crisis.
At Cornell home games, Jim extended his care beyond the athletes, taking pride in looking after referees as well. His belief that everyone on the field deserved support spoke volumes about his character.
In recognition of his decades of service, James Case was inducted into the Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020.
Service Beyond Cornell
Jim’s contributions reached far beyond Ithaca. He was part of the training staff for the United States’ World Lacrosse team tryouts in 1990, 1994, and 1998, and he served as trainer for Team USA during the World Lacrosse Championships in Manchester (1994) and Baltimore (1998).
For more than 25 summers, Jim was also a trusted presence at the Lake Placid Summit Classic, where he cared for men’s and women’s lacrosse players of all ages. In 2022, he was posthumously honored as a “Legend of Lake Placid” for his years of service and dedication.
A Beloved Friend and Mentor
Off the field, Jim’s warmth drew people together. After games in Ithaca, he could often be found at the Fall Creek House, where he swapped stories, laughed with friends, and created memories with players and colleagues. His sudden passing in March 2020 at age 55 deeply impacted the Cornell and broader lacrosse communities.
Known as the calming voice on the sideline and the steady hand in moments of crisis, Jim Case will always be remembered for his ability to keep athletes smiling and motivated, even during difficult times. His legacy continues to live on in the countless players, coaches, referees, and friends whose lives he touched — both on and off the field.
