Doug Rowe
There are coaches who teach skills, and then there are coaches who build lives. Doug Rowe belongs firmly in the latter category.
At the center of his decades-long career is a mission statement that has guided every practice, every season, and every athlete he has mentored:
“To create opportunities for kids by exposing them to lifetime activities and experiences that usually come from their connection with the game of lacrosse.”
A Mission Beyond the Game: The Enduring Legacy of Lacrosse Coach Doug Rowe
That philosophy has defined Doug Rowe not just as a successful lacrosse coach, but as a steward of the sport and a transformational leader whose impact extends far beyond the field.
A Foundation Built on Education and Experience
Doug Rowe’s lacrosse journey began at Baldwinsville High School, where his passion for the game first took shape. That foundation continued through Herkimer Community College and SUNY Brockport, and culminated at Cortland State, where he earned his New York State Teaching Certification along with a master’s degree. Along the way, he competed as a player at Baldwinsville, Herkimer, and Brockport, gaining firsthand insight into the discipline, teamwork, and resilience that lacrosse demands.
This blend of academic preparation and competitive experience would later become a defining strength of his coaching career.
Three Decades of Excellence on the Sidelines
Since 1991, Doug Rowe has taught and coached girls’ lacrosse at Baldwinsville, building one of the most respected and consistent programs in the state. His reach has spanned every age level, from toddlers first picking up a stick to preteens and teenagers discovering their confidence, voice, and competitive edge.
His results speak with uncommon clarity. Over the years, Doug’s teams compiled a remarkable 318–94 record, a 77.2% winning percentage that places him among the elite coaches in the sport. His program achievements include a State Championship, a State runner-up finish, multiple Section III Championships, 16 years ranked in the top 15 statewide, and an extraordinary 21 seasons earning the State Scholar Athlete Team Award.
Perhaps most telling is the individual success of his athletes. Twenty-two players earned All-American honors, and 82% of his players continued to compete at the collegiate level — an achievement that reflects not just athletic development, but preparation for the next stage of life.
Creating Opportunities on a Global Stage
Doug Rowe’s commitment to opportunity has never been limited by geography. In 1993, he founded the now-famous Star-Spangled Girls Tournament, an event that continues to grow and serve as a premier platform for competition, exposure, and community within the sport.
His teams have traveled extensively, competing across the East Coast, as well as in Colorado, California, and England. Two of his players, Chris Lindsey and Britney Scott, reached the highest levels of international competition, earning World Cup medals — milestones that underscore the global impact of his coaching influence.
A Coach Measured by Impact
While championships and win totals are impressive, Doug Rowe measures success differently. He measures it in the doors opened for young women, the confidence built through sport, and the lifelong lessons carried long after the final whistle. His players leave the program with more than accolades; they leave with perspective, discipline, and a deep appreciation for what the game can give back.
Family and Life Beyond the Field
Away from lacrosse, Doug married his wife Royetta in 1988, and together they raised two daughters. Family has always been a grounding force in his life, reinforcing the values of commitment, balance, and purpose that define both his personal and professional journey.
A Lasting Legacy
Doug Rowe’s story is not just one of wins and titles, but of vision and follow-through. His mission — to use lacrosse as a gateway to opportunity — has been fulfilled thousands of times over through the lives he has shaped. In every sense, his career stands as a Hall of Fame legacy: one built on excellence, integrity, and an unwavering belief in the power of sport to change lives.
