The Upstate Lacrosse Foundation is proud to announce Bruce Yancey as one of the Hall of Fame inductees for the Class of 2023. Bruce Yancey’s illustrious lacrosse journey, which began in his high school years and continued through his college career and coaching endeavors, has left an indelible mark on the sport. Let’s delve into the remarkable lacrosse career of this Hall of Famer.

High School Heroics

Bruce Yancey’s lacrosse odyssey started at FM High School, where he graduated in the year 1982. During his time at FM, he was a standout athlete, making his presence felt both on the lacrosse field and the football gridiron.

As a lacrosse player, Yancey spent four years on the varsity team, displaying an unwavering commitment to the sport. His dedication culminated in the prestigious title of All-American in 1982. Furthermore, he left a lasting legacy by graduating as the all-time leading goal scorer and points leader for FM High School.

Yancey’s athletic prowess extended beyond lacrosse as he also earned recognition as a two-year letterman in football. His high school resume set the stage for a collegiate career that would further solidify his status as a lacrosse legend.

Collegiate Achievements

Yancey’s collegiate lacrosse journey took him to two renowned institutions: Hofstra and Washington College.

At Hofstra, he spent a year and immediately made a significant impact by setting a freshman goal record for a season. This was just the beginning of his remarkable college lacrosse career.

Transferring to Washington College, Yancey continued to shine on the lacrosse field. He earned accolades as a 1st team D3 All-American and 2nd team D3 All-American during his two-year stint with the team. His contributions were instrumental in the success of the Washington College lacrosse program, with his team earning the distinction of being a two-time NCAA Division III National Championship runner-up.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Yancey’s 1985 Washington College team was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. He also left his mark on the record books, tying for the most points in the NCAA Division III playoffs in 1986. His excellence on the field earned him a spot on the All-Decade Team for the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Conference in the 1980s.

Beyond the Field: Coaching and Contributions

Bruce Yancey’s commitment to the sport of lacrosse didn’t end with his playing career. He generously shared his knowledge and passion by coaching for two years each with the FM Modify team and the CBA JV team. His coaching contributions undoubtedly nurtured the talents of aspiring lacrosse players and left a lasting impact on the local lacrosse community.

Yancey’s dedication to the sport runs in the family, with two of his sons following in his footsteps and playing lacrosse at FM. One of his sons is even continuing the Yancey lacrosse legacy, currently playing at Cortland.
