In 1862, on the Onondaga Nation, lacrosse was more than a game — it was culture, ceremony, and identity. Yet access to equipment was limited, and most families could not afford lacrosse sticks. That challenge sparked a legacy.

Preserving the Heart and Craft of Onondaga Lacrosse

Alfie Jacques’ father, Lou Jacques, began crafting lacrosse sticks by hand so the game could be played. What started as a necessity became a tradition. Lou passed the art of stickmaking to his sons, Alfie and Clyde, embedding craftsmanship, patience, and pride into every piece of wood shaped for the game.

From 1968 to 1974, the Jacques family produced nearly 12,000 handmade lacrosse sticks each year, supplying players far beyond their own community. These sticks were not just tools — they were extensions of heritage, shaped by hands that understood the spirit of the game.

A Leader on Every Part of the Field

Alfie Jacques grew up immersed in lacrosse, playing every position at LaFayette High School and for the Onondaga Nation teams. His deep understanding of the game came not from specialization, but from total immersion. He learned how each role mattered and how leadership shifted depending on need.

That versatility carried into a distinguished playing and coaching career. Jacques played for, coached, and led multiple successful teams, including the Syracuse Stingers, Syracuse Lacrosse Club, Syracuse Warriors, and the Onondaga Red Hawks. Across generations, his teams exemplified discipline, toughness, and respect for the sport’s roots.

A Living Steward of Tradition

Though Jacques has retired from coaching, his influence has not slowed. He continues to make his renowned lacrosse sticks, preserving a craft that predates organized sport itself. More importantly, he ensures that the knowledge does not end with him.

Jacques actively trains four apprentices, passing down techniques, values, and responsibility. He understands that tradition survives only when it is shared.

Beyond the workshop, Jacques fosters appreciation for lacrosse history and stickmaking through demonstrations and lectures. His work has reached schools and colleges across New York State, New Mexico, Maryland, and Arizona, educating new generations about the cultural foundations of the game and the artistry behind its tools.

A Hall of Fame Legacy

Alfie Jacques represents the rare figure whose impact transcends statistics and championships. His legacy lives in the hands of players who learned with his sticks, in the teams shaped by his leadership, and in the apprentices who will carry the craft forward.

He stands as a bridge between the past and the future — a guardian of tradition, a teacher of craft, and a Hall of Fame figure whose contributions continue to shape lacrosse at its most authentic level.
